Starting the month of October, I have decided that I will be featuring young artist or creators who, I believe, I have confidence in assisting my objective in this platform that I have designed. I hope that you, my gorgeous readers, will find encouragement and inspiration on their experiences that they are about to share.
As I have mentioned before, one of the reasons I started this blog is to have a purpose and leave a legacy to my readers. I believe that “words” are powerful entities that can either make or break an individual. As words speak to what has transpired, our capabilities pin its ears back.
This young artist that I will be featuring here on my blog is someone who, I would say, puts so much work and effort into his passion. I’m excited that just about last week I was given the chance to ask him questions and thought that it would be great that he’d be the first subject that I’ll introduce to everyone.
Mark Mendy is an Italian
music enthusiast who wrote the song Hide and Seek that has almost a million
hits on Spotify. Mendy’s journey in the music industry started about two years
ago when he was reunited with one of his closest friends at a party whom he shares
mutual passion for making music with. A couple days after, his
friend who also runs FL Studio exhibited his recent works and projects to him.
While listening inside that room, a question popped at the
back of Mendy’s head that marked the beginning of his journey to his passion – "What if I make my own songs?"
Can
you tell us about yourself?
My name’s Marco and I’m an Italian music producer /
songwriter / singer. Mark Mendy is actually an anagram that comes from the words 'My Denmark'. Before I started making music I spent a whole year in Copenhagen, DK. It was one of the best experiences in my life so when it came to choose an artist name I wanted to find something like a tribute to the place I had left a few months earlier. So there's is no relation between my real name and artist name, even though it may look like that.
I started this journey back in 2015 as a music producer
and then I turned into a songwriter and (sometimes) a singer too. At the
beginning, I remember I was fully into a genre called 'tropical house' – I used
to listen to Kygo and Klingande on a loop! But, as time went
on, I realized my biggest passion was song writing and inevitably moved my
attention to pop music. My inspirations / favorite artists are Lauv, Jon Bellion, Maroon 5 and
Loote. Currently I am finishing 3 songs, they’re all very
different and I think each shows a new side of me. Also one of them has me as
lead singer, I’m very curious to know what people will think about my voice!
Unfortunately I’ve got no release dates yet so I really can’t say more about
them.
You write all of your own music; where do you
draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about
the process?
I always write the instrumental part for all my
songs, sometimes I write the vocals too. Hide
& Seek was entirely written by me then I contacted Adam Christopher and asked him to sing. My favorite part of the writing
process is when I have to come up with lyrics and the vocal melodies, which is
the very first part of the process. I just grab a guitar and find a chord
progression I like and then words starts popping to my head. I generally talk
about love in all its various forms.
What
is the story behind Hide & Seek?
The song tells about
a relationship between two people who see love differently. The story is told
by the guy and - in this specific case - he just wants to lay down with his
partner all day and relax. On the other side, the girl is the one who wants to
travel/discover/experience so she keeps running to find new things, and the guy
(who is probably inspired by an old version of me) spends whole days chasing
his love. They’re both in love with each other but somehow it feels like one of
them can live without the other. I guess we all have been through something
like this :)
Do
you follow a formula when writing songs?
At the very beginning I remember I used to write
some very easy piano chord progressions and then play around with a bunch of
sounds until I found the one I like the most. I think a lot of bedroom producers
out there can understand what I'm talking about lol Fortunately I changed my approach –now, I would say
my creative process is very similar to how a singer would write down a song. I
start from lyrics, vocal melodies and some guitar chords. So, when creating I
don’t even have to turn on my laptop and this is what I love the most about my
evolution from a bedroom producer to a more complete artist.
What’s
next for you?
Hard to say, a bright
future maybe! :) I don't know, music is a very tough and crazy world. You can
be good at making songs but this doesn't mean you'll have the chance to get the
people to hear them. You need to be really good, you need to find a great
manager and a great label, and you also need a lot of luck. As for me, I'm a
bit out of luck lately but that's ok, I guess it is part of the game. I'm quite
struggling to find a good way to release my new songs but I'm sure something
good is going to happen. I stay positive! :)
A simple “What If” that lead him to one of his best
journeys in life
Mark Mendy’s experience tells us that sometimes our
own path starts with an ambiguous “What if”. I think that we don't necessarily have to avoid asking such simple question to ourselves. Relatively,
it is something that we have to consider because it somehow brings out an idea
that we never even thought of them before. Our future is unpredictable and we almost always don’t get how we want them to occur, so might as well try and do everything you believe you can to put your passion into materialization. Mark Mendy once started as a bedroom producer and has gone all the way into a complete artist that has already released several songs with massive hits on Spotify.
